Job Description

Position scope:

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing principle support on all matters pertaining to Employee/ Industrial Relations.

Key Responsibilities
  • To develop and review Employee /Industrial Relations Strategies, Policies and Procedures in line with best practice & legal requirements.
  • Implement the disciplinary and grievance handling policies and procedures taking into account application of law, organization values, operational policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for employee relations issues including investigation, mediation and conflict resolution.
  • To communicate recommendations on disciplinary action to be taken.
  • To facilitate building of managerial capacity of management staff on employee / industrial relations in conjunction with Learning and Development Unit.
  • To liaise with Legal & Company Secretary Division on all legal issues relating to staff and ensure timely closure of the same.
  • Internally manage law suits filed against the Bank involving former staff; includes liaising with the legal division for technical legal advice / guidance, collating appropriate case documentation and evidence, contacting witnesses to corroborate the organization’s legal position.
  • In liaison with the Security Department and or other concerned Departments, line management and staff, investigate or coordinate the investigation of staff cases relating to disciplinary and grievance matters and ensure their conclusion and or determination.
  • Manage staff separation procedures and communication, ensuring that internal policies and related statutory requirements are observed/fulfilled.
  • Manage and maintain relationships with Internal / External customers/ stakeholders such as Trade Unions/Committees, Medical, Wellness and Safety Providers and Consultants, Industry bodies (e.g. Kenya Bankers Association, Federation of Kenya Employers), Lawyers, Functional Directors, Heads of Departments, Branch Managers, Line Managers and all other staff .
  • Serve as the primary relationship manager with all union leadership in order to build and sustain strong, productive and effective relationships.
  • Provide secretarial support for staff committees, schemes, initiatives or forums relating to the Disciplinary and Grievance Handling Committees, Appeals Committees, Union/Management Meetings, Staff Recognition Panels, Staff Visits and Engagement Forums).
  • Oversee the staff wellness programs and medical scheme.
  • Compile periodic reports and maintain accurate and consistent data, records and statistics relating to disciplinary and industrial relations issues.
Qualifications, Experience,Skills& Personal Attributes:
  • A University degree from an institution recognized by the Commission for University Education in Human Resources/Social Science or a Business–related field.
  • A professional Human Resources qualification or equivalent – Certificate, Diploma or Postgraduate Diploma in Employee Relations.
  • Valid professional membership from IHRM (Kenya) or other relevant institution. • Professional practicing license from IHRM.
  • An MBA or Bachelor’s degree in Law (LLB) will be an added advantage.
  • 8 years of Human Resource Management experience; with at least 5 years management experience in Employee / Industrial Relations- preferably within the Banking and Financial Sector.
  • Must have prior working experience with staff unions and union matters.
  •  Prior experience in drafting or negotiating of Collective Bargaining Agreement/s (CBA)
  • Prior experience supervising a unit/others doing similar work.
  • Sound understanding of HR Policies and Procedures.
  • Knowledge of Labour and Employment Laws and HR Regulatory Guidelines.
  • Sound knowledge of Banking laws and regulations.
  • Excellent leadership, interpersonal and team management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, coach, motivate and develop staff.
  • Good Customer and Stakeholder management skills
  • Good communication skills- oral and written.
  • Analytical and report writing skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure.
