Job Description

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

The Partnership Leader Advocacy & External Engagement - (PL A&EE) will provide overall leadership and strategic oversight to our Advocacy and External Engagement across the partnership engaging heavily in both internal and external components of this work. This highly influential role is critical to delivering key aspects of World Vision’s first ever global strategy – Our Promise 2030. The post holder will champion Strategic Imperative #3 of Our Promise 2030 “Collaborating and advocating for broader impact: Changing from largely working on our own, in our way, to partnerships, joint ventures and advocacy with those who share our goals”.

External engagement helps ensure World Vision is strongly positioned with priority external stakeholders from all sectors to wield influence, inspire action, increase visibility, gather intelligence, initiate partnerships and raise income all to support the achievement of World Vision’s strategic priorities and increase impact on child well-being.

Action resulting from external engagement includes, but is not limited to: improved policy and service delivery by governments; increased resource allocation from donors; increase in meaningful child participation; a private sector more aligned with building child well-being; increased brand recognition and income for World Vision; raised awareness and behaviour change among all stakeholders; enhanced and productive partnerships; innovation and ministry improvements; enhanced reputation and influence for World Vision.

This approach is consistent with the vision, mission and core values of World Vision (WV) and this position leads the function and principles for Advocacy and External Engagement across the World Vision Partnership.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Lead development of strong external relationships especially in the global capitals –(New York, Geneva, Brussels and Addis):

  • Engage with influential external stakeholders on the key issues affecting children as identified in Our Promise 2030.
  • Ensure that all senior leaders have appropriate external engagement plans for themselves and their teams.
  • Proactively support the President’s external engagement.
  • Lead ‘It takes a World’ & demonstrates global campaign strategy momentum and impact: Continue to build internal support, momentum of and cross partnership ownership of the campaign.
  • Continue to develop external support for and impact of the campaign through building broad coalitions with all potential partners that can contribute to ending violence against children.
  • Ensure the campaign is mostly with and by children and not only for children.
  • Support the Global Partnership to end violence.

Lead Strategic Initiative (SI 3.2); Equip and support National Offices:

  • Engage effectively in cross-sector partnerships and platforms to achieve their child well-being objectives and contribute to Sustainable Development Goals.
  • Ensure Partner of Choice initiative and partnership brokering and facilitation support services are contributing to a significant increase in partnering effectiveness.

Empower all Global Centre (GC) teams to develop and implement external engagement plans focused on the achievement of Child Well Being (CWB) Objectives:

  • Enhance External Engagement as a key part of the WV’s effort to manage and build stronger relationships with the external world. It recognises that World Vision’s impact multiplies when we work with other actors from across society.

Provide global leadership on implementation of Agenda 2030:

  • Follow up on Sustainable Development Goals implementation and delivery for children, helping hold governments and stakeholders accountable to their Agenda 2030 commitments.
  • Ensure WV champions children’s participation and empowers children to be proactive agents of changes.

Other responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage A&EE team.
  • Develop and provide oversight of organizational capacity for advocacy and external engagement.
  • Ensure awareness amongst internal and external audiences of WV’s Christian distinctiveness.
  • Provide oversight to all WV’s policy positions.

KNOWLEDGE,SKILLS & ABILITIES:

 Required:

  • Master’s Degree in international studies or relevant field;
  • A minimum of 10 years leadership and operational experience in international relief and development activities; at least five (5) years direct Advocacy/External Engagement experience in a senior advocacy role or as a national director with a strong focus on External Engagement;
  • Strong understanding of and experience in international development and key current policy debates;
  • Strong knowledge of the child rights agenda and Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development;
  • Demonstrated track record at global level of external influence and of establishing and leading strategic partnerships;
  • Very strong organizational leadership that enables post holder to have a “whole of partnership” view and not just a narrow sectoral view;
  • Excellent communications skills, including as a representative of World Vision in external forums and as a media spokesperson;
  • Successful track record of functioning effectively at senior levels across large and complex multinational organizations (C-suite level);
  • Proven ability to be a risk taker – ability to make timely tough decisions on when and how to speak out and when to advocate more discreetly;
  • Exceptional relational, negotiating and cross cultural skills that develop trust and enable achievement of job objective, both internally and externally;
  • Capacity to act as a servant leader, strong faith in Christ, with the ability to demonstrate this faith through motives and actions in all contexts.
  • A humanitarian leader who is passionate about World Vision’s mission, values and vision, who is driven to work with marginalized, vulnerable and impoverished children and communities, and who can enthuse the organization with confidence, energy and vision;
  • Is highly relational and very good a building relationships internally and externally
  • A passion for justice and for children’s participation;
  • Experience working in a matrix reporting environment;
  • Experience in culture change and change management;
  • Effective written and verbal communications and presentation skills in English;
  • Secondary language in French, Spanish, a plus.
  • Tertiary qualifications in business management.

Work Environment:

  • The position requires ability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally up to 40% of the time.
