Job Description:

The Data Science Director will report to Arifu’s CTO and will be responsible for:

  • Developing and executing a cutting-edge data science program that impacts the lives of our learners, generates social and financial returns for partners, and delivers business intelligence to the entire Arifu team;
  •  Running regression analysis between the Arifu database and the databases of our multinational partners (banks, MNOs, agribusinesses, research consortiums, etc.) to identify correlations that will translate into major product innovations such as propensity, attrition, and credit scores;
  • Contributing to Arifu’s adaptive learning technology that generates real-time recommendations for optimal learning paths through content hosted in the Arifu platform based on user profile-driven predictions;
  • Developing code to integrate with the Arifu platform that will process unstructured text received from learners in order for our system to better respond to their questions, direct learners to relevant content, and infer user traits;
  • Mining the millions of interactions in our system to uncover new opportunities for product development;
  • Attracting, structuring, and mentoring a growing team of data analysts;
  • Maintaining strong project management capabilities including planning, communicating, documenting, and tracking milestones and results;
  • Publishing white papers on the innovation and impact of our work;
  • Contributing thought leadership with industry executives at the multinational organizations Arifu partners with;
  • Participating in community events, trade meetups, and industry workshops in Nairobi and globally.

Qualifications:

For this role, we’re looking for someone who meets the following criteria:

  • 5 - 10+ years of professional experience in data science with at least 3 years in a leadership capacity;
  • Master degree preferred but not required;
  • Passion to use your skills to bring quality products and services to underserved communities;
  • Demonstrated ability to design, develop, and iterate on algorithms in areas relevant to Arifu’s innovation: natural language processing, alternative data credit scoring, propensity scoring, attrition scoring, and adaptive learning;
  • Advanced technical knowledge of R;
  • Experience leading high performing teams of data analysts;
  • Total attention to detail, pride in your work, and a commitment to consistently deliver on time;
  • Humility to know what you can improve on, openness to give and receive constructive feedback, and the drive to invest in continued learning as you pursue mastery;
  • Willingness to be based in Nairobi and travel periodically as we expand to serve people and partners in 17 countries by 2020;
  • Ability to handle the chaos of a fast-paced startup work culture and a willingness to take on additional tasks and support the work of other team members as necessary to achieve collective goals.
