Purpose Of This Role The purpose of the role is to manage the implementation, monitoring and reporting of Farm Africa – Kenya’s project titled “ Enhancement of livelihoods in the Kenyan Coastal Region by supporting Organic and Fair Trade certification of smallholders ”. The project is based on empowering smallholder farmers to access better market opportunities, by training farmers on good farming practices and achieving Organic and Fair Trade certification in selected value chains (primarily cashew nuts, and secondarily sesame and eventual additional ones to be identified). This will provide youth, women and men the incentive to commit to agricultural production, and will as a consequence improve their economic stability, and reduce their vulnerability to drought and other natural severities. The project will focus specifically on empowering marginalised groups in the cashew and sesame value chains through further training on livelihood diversification. This position requires an experienced manager with strong technical skills in implementing complex agricultural projects, with a track record of production, marketing, product logistics and post-harvest handling. Close coordination with an SME implementing partner will be required. The position will also need a manager with flexibility and skills in building highly effective teams as to effectively implement the project in three counties. Efficiency, decisiveness and strong leadership ability are essential traits. A high level of competence with budgeting, quality reporting and work planning is necessary. Task and Key Responsibilities Take overall responsibility for the planning, implementation and management of the project. Project and Financial Management Track project progress on a weekly basis and provide routine updates as agreed with the Programme Manager. To prepare monthly project budgets and work plans in line with Farm Africa’s planning process and schedules on timely basis Provide monthly feedback on budget utilisation and variation against approved budgets using standard formats. To manage the project in accordance with project documents, work plans and budgets and ensure that work is consistent with Farm Africa’s strategies and the conditions of donor contracts To prepare and submit quarterly narrative and financial reports in the standard format to the line manager with both internal and donor requirements To ensure that financial management in the field office is in compliance with the basic standards contained in the Farm Africa finance procedures manual and donor requirements Delivering Technical Excellence The PC will be responsible for ensuring the technical excellence of all activities delivered within the project with a specific focus Agribusiness capacity building and smallholder access to finance. Work with the Programme Manager to identify areas of technical development within the project and team and mobilise resources to support this. Ensure follow up of technical trainings to analyse effectiveness and uptake of trainings. Delivery of training to Ten Senses extension officers on use of E-Soko (K Plus app) farmer training tool Team Management In liaison with the programmes manager, participate in the recruitment of new staff/talent to the project team, including proper induction processes To provide leadership to all project staff and develop effective team work and individual staff skills relevant to the project and the Farm Africa business plan. To carry out quarterly and end of project appraisals with all line-managed staff in line with Farm Africa staff appraisal system. Line management of the project staff and provide technical and operational backstopping while, on day to day basis, be directly engaged in practical elements of project implementation Stakeholder Management To work efficiently together with Ten Senses Africa Limited and other program implementing partners while maintaining Farm Africa’s values and achievement of objectives. To manage and nurture mutually beneficial partnerships with other stakeholders, including various service providers, Government departments, Local NGO’s and private sector companies. To keep abreast of relevant changes in government policy that could affect the project and advise senior management accordingly Monitoring Evaluation and Learning Adopt Farm Africa’s Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) practices and frameworks and ensure project team actively collect, analyse and manage data to feed into project delivery. Ensure systematic and timely collection of agreed project data and its accurate analysis to inform project decision making. In collaboration with the M&E team, develop and implement a project monitoring and evaluation process, capturing project outcomes/impact and lessons learned. Visibility, Communication and Networking Build and strengthen relationship with donors, implementing partners, other INGOs, relevant government institutions and other stakeholders Oversee the development and implementation of the project’s visibility strategy in line with donor guidelines Ensure regular and effective communication communications are maintained within the project, Kenya Country Office and implementing partners Organisation To play an active role as a member of the Farm Africa Kenya team. Identify and explore opportunities to grow and expand the country project pipeline, both in relation to the current project or related to new project opportunities for Farm Africa Kenya. In consultation with the PM, to act as an ambassador, promoting the project and the work of Farm Africa, including hosting visitors, speaking at workshops, conferences and meeting donors and other officials as and when required To ensure that the project contributes to, responds to and complies with all relevant agriculture sector policy developments. To contribute to the development of Farm Africa policies and strategies related to smallholder climate smart agriculture.
